Further information:
"Art has never been incidental. In all ages it has been the inevitable product of the social dynamo. Herbert Read divides art into 5 main periods of florescence, and the motivating force behind all these periods was a dynamic, progressive religion. I stress the progressive, evolutionary element in religion because it is possible that no religion can be finally true. Truth is not an abstraction ultimately discernable beyond human knowledge; it is discoverable here, in positive relation to our social and economic systems. As these change, so the nature of truth changes, as our relation to an outworn system merges into a new relation to a new system of values. Thus out relation to socialism is not the same as out relation to capitalism, because our sense of values, our estimate of truth, has changed. We are, in fact, establishing a new religion, which is generally not recognised as a religion at all, because an out-of-date ecclesiastical system, which has failed to adapt itself to scientific and economic progress, has monopolized the title for itself." Mary Williams (extract from The Artist's Problem Today)
