'A Bestiary' was first published in 1955 in a limited edition. It was a collaboration between Richard Wilbur, who chose the texts and Alexander Calder, who did the illustrations.
Contributors include Blake, Bunyan, Clare, Disraeli, Kafka, Kipling on the ape, T.E. Lawrence on the camel, Milton on the serpent, Samuel Pepys, Laurence Sterne on the fly, Tennyson, Gilbert White, Elizabeth Bishop, William Faulkner, Herman Melville, Marianne Moore and Walt Whitman. There are also contributions from Homer, Pliny and Plutarch, Aesop, Grimm and Darwin.
